The shooting took place at Fortune Happiness restaurant in east Vancouver, a late-night eatery.

Two men entered the Chinese restaurant and opened fire at about 4:30 a.m. local time, said Const. Howard Chow of the Vancouver police department.

At the end of it we ended up with eight people shot," said Chow, who said early indications are that the shooting was a "targeted hit."

"It appears that it was not a random attack," Chow said.

'Our investigators got on the scene fairly quickly. It was a very chaotic scene as you can appreciate, broken windows and chairs and tables overturned, and having to deal with frantic witnesses," he said.

Another police officer said the floor of the restaurant was littered with what appeared to be nine-millimeter shell casings, likely from automatic or semi-automatic rifles.

The gunmen fled the small eatery and no arrests have been made, Chow said.

The six shooting victims were taken to hospital and one is reportedly in serious condition. The injuries to the other victims are not yet known, said Chow.

He would not release any details on the deceased victims, including whether they were male or female or their approximate ages.

The area surrounding the Fortune Happiness restaurant has been shut down while police investigate.

Several witnesses have been brought to a police station for questioning.

Chow said the restaurant has never been a trouble spot before this shooting.
