Eckstein Delivers St. Louis a 3-1 Series Lead10/27/06
St.Louis, MO
David Eckstein's eighth inning double drove in the winning run Thursday as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Detroit, 5-4, to take a 3-1 lead in the World Series.
Eckstein powered the St. Louis Cardinals to the brink of a championship Thursday. He smashed four hits, including the go-ahead double before 46,470 joyous fans at Busch Stadium.
"You've got to give him credit," the Tigers' Craig Monroe said of Eckstein, whose go-ahead double tipped off Monroe's glove in left center. "He's not a big guy. He's not the strongest. But he finds ways to grind it out for that team."
The Cardinals can clinch their first title since 1982 with a victory in Game 5 on Friday.
