Eagle River, Alaska - Alaska Republican Congressman Don Young says the United States should "cut and run" from Iraq.

Alaska Congressman Don Young says the United States should cut and run from Iraq.

Young spoke on Wednesday after addressing the Eagle River Chamber of Commerce in Eagle River, Alaska.

In suggesting the US plan a slow withdrawal of troops from Iraq, he is in direct opposition to President Bush's stance of "staying the course".

Today, the Vice-President reiterated the administrations point. "It may not be popular with the public -- it doesn't matter in the sense that we have to continue the mission and do what we think is right," Dick Cheney told ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

President Bush has repeatedly said that suggesting we leave Iraq now is "cutting and running" and that he will not reduce troop levels. Sean Hannity of Fox News has said that anyone who suggests we leave Iraq is a "cut and runner" and a "coward".

Young also says that removing Saddam Hussein averted World War III. He didn't explain how he came to that conclusion.

Young faces challenger Diane Benson in next weeks election. In the latest polls, Benson is gaining fast on Young.

Benson says the war was a mistake from the start. She says those who supported it should face the consequences.

Benson's son was wounded and lost potions of both of his legs while serving in Iraq.
