Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury align in rare coupling

December 9th, 2006

New York, NY - Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury will line up tomorrow in a phenomenon that hasn't been seen since 1925 and won't be seen again until 2053.

Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury will line up tomorrow in a phenomenon that hasn't been seen since 1925 and won't be seen again until 2053.

About 45 minutes before dawn on Sunday all three planets will be so close that a person's thumb can obscure all three from view.

The planets are actually hundreds of millions of miles apart, but to the human eye, they'll be right next to each other.

The way to find the planets, which will be low on the east-southeast horizon, is to hold your arm straight out, with your hand in a fist and the pinky at the bottom. Halfway up your fist is how high the planets will appear above the horizon, said Miami Space Transit Planetarium director Jack Horkheimer quoted by AP.

Jupiter will be white, Mercury pinkish, and Mars butterscotch-colored, the AP reports.
