Huge explosions engulfed the Chemcentral Corp. chemical plant in flames Wednesday, forcing evacuations as the fire spread to nearby houses and delivered a toxic cloud over the city.

Officials were evacuating the area around the plant and were going door-to-door through several blocks to get people out.

The fire began after several 55-gallon drums containing chemicals exploded, touching off more explosions and fires, including blasts from three 30,000-gallon tankers, Fire Marshal Floyd Peoples told the Associated Press.

"We are just thankful everybody is OK. Now we just have to work with the fire department to get this contained," Nienhueser said to the AP.
