American soldier gets 100 years in rape, death of Iraqi girl

Fort Campbell, Ky. - A U.S. soldier was sentenced to 100 years in prison Thursday night after pleading guilty in the rape and murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the slaying of her parents and sister, during a court-martial at Fort Campbell, Ky., a military spokeswoman said.

According to Media Relations Officer Cathy Gramling, Sgt. Paul Cortez will also be given a dishonorable discharge from the Army.

The sentence was part of a plea agreement in the case in which Cortez agreed to cooperate in pending cases against others soldiers involved in the incident.

He could be out on parole in as little as 10 years.
