Jake Plummer retires from the NFL

March 4, 2007

Denver, Colorado - Jake Plummer announced his retirement on Sunday after a 10-year NFL career.

Jake Plummer announced his retirement on Sunday after a 10-year NFL career.

The 32-year-old's decision came a day after he was traded from the Denver Broncos to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who also picked up Jeff Garcia.

Plummer, who lost his job as starting quarterback at Denver last season, clearly did not look forward to competing with Garcia for the role in Florida.

Garcia, 37, is in pole position now as he led the Philadelphia Eagles to the play-offs last season.

Garcia, who deputised brilliantly for the injured Donovan McNabb in Philadelphia last season, has passed for 20,385 yards and 136 touchdowns in eight NFL seasons with the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers.

He will compete for the right to lead the offense at the rebuilding Bucs with incumbents Chris Simms and Bruce Gradkowski.

Plummer threw for 29,253 yards and 161 touchdowns in 10 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and the Broncos.
