Washington, D.C. - The Senate's No. 3 Democrat called Sunday for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign after revelations that the FBI misused its authority and complaints about a Justice Department shakeup that saw eight federal prosecutors replaced.

The Senate's No. 3 Democrat called Sunday for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign after revelations that the FBI misused its authority and complaints about a Justice Department shakeup that saw eight federal prosecutors replaced.

And in a Sunday editorial, The New York Times urged President Bush to fire Gonzales, writing that the attorney general "has never stopped being consigliere to Mr. Bush's imperial presidency."

Gonzales is a "nice man," said New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

But under his leadership, Schumer said, the Justice Department has been so politicized that Gonzales should resign "for the sake of the nation."

"What we found in the Justice Department over and over again is a lack of respect for the rule of law, a lack of respect for balance of powers," Schumer told CBS' "Face the Nation."
