New York, NY - The National Weather Service on Wednesday named its first storm, Andrea, three weeks ahead of the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season.

The National Weather Service on Wednesday named its first storm, Andrea, three weeks ahead of the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season.

Subtropical Storm Andrea, with sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and higher gusts, was centered 100 miles southeast of Savannah, Ga., and about 135 miles north-northeast of Daytona Beach, Fla.

It was moving slowly toward the west at 3 mph, forecasters said.

A tropical storm watch was issued for the southeastern coast from Altamaha Sound in Georgia to Flagler Beach in Florida, an NWS statement said.

A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within 36 hours.
