Bush claims interest in cutting greenhouse gases

May 31, 2007

Washington, D.C. - President Bush said that the United States should work with other nations to try to establish a new framework on global gas emissions to counter the effects of global warming.

President Bush said that the United States should work with other nations to try to establish a new framework on global gas emissions to counter the effects of global warming.

"My proposal is this: By the end of next year, America and other nations will set a long-term global goal for reducing greenhouse gases," Bush told the Global Leadership Campaign in advance of next week's G8 summit, to be held in Germany.

To decide on that goal, the United States will meet with those nations that produce the most greenhouse gas emissions, including countries with fast-growing economies such as India and China, he said.

In addition to setting a long-term global goal, each country would set a mid-term national target, he said. Then, over the next year and a half, leaders from different sectors of the economy would form working groups to cooperate on ways to share clean-energy technology and best practices, he said.
