McCain takes immigration head on
June 1, 2007
Washington, D.C. - Senator John McCain plans to deliver an address on immigration next Monday, his presidential campaign announced today.
The address comes only one day before the CNN GOP presidential debate, and directly confronts an issue for which McCain has taken heat from many in his own party.
Several GOP candidates have come out against the Senate bill McCain was involved in drafting, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney who has said it is the "wrong approach" and amounts to "amnesty."
Romney's criticism of the bill led to a heated spat between the two candidates last week, with McCain accusing the Massachusetts's Republican of "flip flopping" on his immigration position.
